Which is the best handheld GPS unit to get?

It’s really up to the individual, but there are some great global positioning systems out there worth considering. The Etrex fits in the palm of the hand. The Magellan too, Garmin, Tom Tom - the navigator list is endless.

The best GPS navigation portable might have GIS, a geographic information system. Garmin’s navigational positioning hardware, for example, gets fine reviews. It’s not the lowest priced, or the top either, but a good system nevertheless.

Of course, it can depend on what you intend to use your GPS system for. Is it on a boat, in which case you’ll need marine protection and possibly special charts? A GPS designed for nautical use can be more comprehensive and robust.

I suppose the bottom line in acquiring the best portable is to simply compare the various statistics and specifications of the many models available, keeping the costs in mind if you have a tight budget.

Keep in mind though that even the lowest performing ones are still pretty good. It’s not so long ago that we didn’t have little hand held systems. We’ve come a long way in a relatively short time.
